An Ultimate IOQM Exam Guide: Syllabus, Exam Pattern, Eligibility & Preparation Roadmap (2026)

In the Mathematical Olympiad Program, the Indian Olympiad Qualifier in Mathematics (IOQM) is the first milestone students need to conquer in their International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) journey. This exam operates as an entry stage to the progression journey of the Regional Mathematical Olympiad (RMO), the Indian National Mathematical Olympiad (INMO), and then the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). According to the MTA(I) data, 1,07,936 students appeared for the IOQM 2024-25. Among these, roughly 10,000 students made it to RMO. On the contrary, the total number of students who appeared for the IOQM 2025-26 session has not been officially declared by MTA(I). However, the unofficial data says over 1 lakh students appeared for IOQM 2025-26.

Whether you’re in Class 8, figuring out what Olympiad Mathematics is, or a Class 12 student preparing for the IMO, N Smart’s comprehensive IOQM guide covers everything from the IOQM syllabus, eligibility criteria, exam pattern, a brief guide to build a solid preparation roadmap, along with a few tips on how to use IOQM Previous Year Questions (PYQs) effectively.

What is IOQM?

The Indian Olympiad Qualifier in Mathematics (IOQM) was introduced very recently, back in 2020, to represent India at the world's most prestigious mathematics competition. IOQM is the first stage of India's Mathematical Olympiad programme. It is a national-level mathematics examination designed to identify students with exceptional mathematical reasoning and problem-solving abilities. IOQM evaluates your creative and logical problem-solving skills in unfamiliar mathematical problems. The examination is conducted by the Mathematics Teachers' Association (India) [MTA(I)] and the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE), which coordinates India's participation in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO).

Why Was IOQM Introduced?

Before 2020, students had to clear two separate stages: Pre-Regional Mathematical Olympiad (Pre-RMO) & Regional Mathematical Olympiad (RMO). To simplify the selection process, HBCSE & MTA(I) decided to merge these two exams into a single stage called IOQM. As a result, students now have a uniform selection criterion across India and a simpler registration process.

5 Stages of the Indian Mathematical Olympiad

  • Stage 1: IOQM - The first selection stage, where more than one lakh students participate every year.
  • Stage 2: RMO - Around 9,000 to 10,000 students get shortlisted every year for this stage.
  • Stage 3: INMO - About 900 to 1,100 of India's top mathematical minds compete nationally for INMO.
  • Stage 4: IMO Training Camp - The top 50-55 selected students go through intensive training under leading mathematicians.
  • Stage 5: International Mathematical Olympiad - The final stage, where six students represent India against participants from over 100 countries.

IOQM Syllabus 2026

IOQM is the polar opposite of school mathematics. Even though HBCSE’s official syllabus guidance states that NCERT Maths of Classes 8, 9, & 10 are the major focus areas, IOQM doesn’t test rote memorisation of formulas, rather deep conceptual understanding and creative problem solving. The official IOQM syllabus revolves around four major pillars of Mathematics, i.e., Algebra, Combinatorics, Geometry, and Number Theory.

The Four Core Topic Pillars of IOQM: Important Topics & Chapter Weightage Analysis

Pillars Important Topics Chapter Weightage (2020-25)
Number Theory Divisibility rules, Prime and composite numbers, Greatest Common Divisor (GCD), Least Common Multiple (LCM), Euclidean Algorithm, Modular Arithmetic, Congruences, Remainder Theorems, Linear Diophantine Equations, Euler's Totient 30%-35%
Algebra Polynomial identities, Polynomial equations, Factorisation techniques, Quadratic expressions, Symmetric expressions, Sequences and Series, Arithmetic and Geometric Progressions, Functional Equations, AM-GM Inequality, Cauchy-type inequalities  20%-25%
Combinatorics Basic Counting Principles, Addition Rule, Multiplication Rule, Permutations, Combinations, Pigeonhole Principle, Inclusion-Exclusion Principle, Recursive Counting, Graph-based reasoning, Generating Functions 25%-30%
Geometry Lines and Angles, Triangles, Similarity, Congruence, Circles, Cyclic Quadrilaterals, Tangents, Coordinate Geometry, Reflections, Rotations, Transformations, Basic Trigonometric Relationships 20%-25%
[Note: The chapter-weightage analysis has been done by N Smart, analysing IOQM question papers from 2020-2025 to give you an idea of which chapters to focus more on. However, unlike school board examinations, these topics are never tested in isolation. Questions always test conceptual understanding, requiring knowledge from multiple topics together (E.g., Number Theory & Geometry combined).]
